The Tohoku region of Japan is located in the northeastern part of Honshu island and is composed of six prefectures: Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, Miyagi, and Fukushima. The real-life setting of Hayao Miyazaki's animated film "Spirited Away," the Ginzan Onsen, can be found in Yamagata Prefecture. Another unique winter attraction in Yamagata is the Zao Juhyo, or "ice monsters," which are only seen during the winter season. For those interested in adorable foxes, a visit to the Zao Fox Village in Miyagi Prefecture is a must. While it is possible to explore the entire Tohoku region by train, there are so many routes and options for sightseeing that it can be overwhelming.
