The Chugoku region of Japan is located in the westernmost part of Honshu Island and is comprised of five prefectures: Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Shimane, Tottori, and Okayama. The northern side of the region faces the Sea of Japan and is known as San'in, while the southern side faces the Seto Inland Sea and is referred to as San'yo. The region enjoys ample sunshine and is sometimes called Sanyo. The largest city in the Chugoku region is Hiroshima, which is renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Atomic Bomb Dome and Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island. Other notable tourist attractions in the region include Izumo Taisha in Shimane Prefecture, the sand dunes in Tottori Prefecture, and the picturesque Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter in Okayama Prefecture.
