Sumida River Walk: A Scenic Pedestrian Bridge Connecting Asakusa and Tokyo Sky Tree

The Sumida River Walkway Bridge is a pedestrian bridge newly built by Tobu Railway Company next to the Tobu Railway Viaduct. It opened in June 2020 and connects Asakusa and the Skytree on both sides of the Sumida River.

Previously, to get from Asakusa to the Skytree, one had to either take the train or walk in the scorching sun or cold wind from the Asakusa subway station to the Skytree via the “Azumabashi” bridge outside. Starting in April 2020, walking north from Asakusa Station along the Sumida Park for about five minutes, a new “Sumida River Walk” (隅田川步道) has been opened (location details), which takes only 10 minutes to reach the Skytree, becoming the fastest walking route from Asakusa to the Skytree.

【Transportation】Where is the Sumida River Trail Bridge?

The location of Sumida River Walk near Tobu Railway Asakusa Station is very convenient, as it is situated between the Sumida River and the Senso-ji Temple. From this station, you can easily walk to both of these popular tourist attractions.

【Asakusa Tansu Sightseeing Spot】Sumida Park Cherry Blossom Festival

Since the Edo period, Sumida Park has been a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in Tokyo. During the cherry blossom festival from late March to early April each year, over 500 cherry blossom trees bloom near the side of Sensoji Temple. The view of Tokyo Skytree in the background is truly stunning, and the illuminated trees at night create a romantic atmosphere.

【Sumida River Walk】Scenery Along the Way

To get to the “Sumida River Trail Bridge Asakusa Entrance” from Asakusa Station, first walk to Sumida Park (Asakusa side) and you will see the Tobu Bridge Railway.

The zigzag road before the bridge.

Sumida River Walk (すみだリバーウォーク) has opening hours and is only open from 7am to 10pm.

Before crossing the bridge, you can also take a wide-angle shot of Sumida Park. The view is quite expansive.

There are two “lover’s sanctuaries” on the bridge, and you can see one of them as soon as you get on the bridge. There are many love locks on it!

The Sumida River Trail is 160 meters long and 2.5 meters wide. There is no shade along the way, but because it is not long, you can quickly walk through it. If you come at night, the urban night view on both sides of the Sumida River and the lights of the boats on the river have a unique flavor.

Along the way, you can enjoy the scenery of the Sumida River, and the golden poop also catches your eye.

When you walk to the top of the Tokyo Skytree, you can take another photo of the view from the tower.

【Scenic Spots for a Pleasant Stroll at the Skytree】Tokyo Waterfront Street

The Sumida River Trail crosses the river to the side of the Tokyo Skytree, and along the way are the elevated railway lines of the Tobu Skytree Line. Starting in June 2020, a new mixed-use shopping mall called “Tokyo Mizumachi” opened under this section of the railway viaduct. Visitors can enjoy air-conditioned shopping and take a stroll to the Tokyo Skytree. The mall is designed more like a space for community residents to walk their children and shop for daily necessities, with boutique shops, lifestyle stores, sandwich vendors, Japanese dessert shops, and more. The outdoor area is a waterfront commercial district, and visitors can enjoy the scenic views of the river while walking along the Kitajikken River to the Tokyo Skytree.
